In the section “Energy in the Environment” pupils are expected to understand the basic concepts of designing an energy efficient building.
Two models are available:

Provided with plywood and clear plastic panels which slide into the internal runners. This allows the investigation of cavity wall insulation and double glazing on the heat loss from a house.
The loft insulation experiment is carried out by measuring the temperature rise in the loft space with and without the supplied insulating panel in place.
Results are very convincing, showing that although savings can be made with all types of insulation by far the most effective is that of loft insulation.

This model house can be used to illustrate the energy savings associated with loft insulation only as there are no internal runners fitted. Otherwise the basic design is the same as for model 800/21.
Heating for both models is by means of a 12V, 36W lamp and can be purchased separately (see miscellaneous section)
A 24W lamp can be used but the experimental times will have to be extended.
