Solar Power

In the section “Energy in the Environment” pupils are expected to be familiar with the renewable energy sources that are available to us. This model illustrates clearly the possibility of harnessing electrical power from the sun.

The 1000 mA solar cell placed in bright sunlight or 10 cm from a 36 W bulb or a 60 W mains bulb can be used to drive the motor.

The motor is a highly efficient geared motor and in bright sunlight can raise a small mass attached to the shaft by a thread.

The 1000 mA cell can drive the motor even in hazy sunlight – lower output cells would require bright sunlight.
